I have linux mint 17.1 currently and i bought windows 8.1. I dont have a cd drive so i tried installing it by usb. I used a program to create the iso from the cd on my brothers windows computer. When i boot to windows on my computer i get a message saying that the computer started using the windows installation media. remove the installation media and restart even though i havent installed it on my computer yet. When i try advanced settings it says that my hdd is formatted in gpt or something. Any solutions?

Solution

When you get to Custom:
Select each partition, Delete
Eventually, you are left with one large space
Format that big space
Continue, and let Windows do what it needs.

Never used or heard of Burn Aware.
Try the MS tool to create that boot USB:
Windows USB/DVD Download Tool

Yea i used that program to make the iso bootable but i needed the iso to start off with so i created an iso using BurnAware to create the iso from the windows cd

I select language and time, i hit install now, put in my code, hit install, then i have either upgrade or custom,
if i hit upgrade it says the computer started using the windows installation media. remove the installation media and restart and if i hit custom it says that my hdd is of the gpt partition so i cant install

If all you have on that drive currently is LinuxMint, you must choose Custom.

Are you wanting to replace LinuxMint, or have both in dualboot?
