24GB G.Skill Ripjaws X series? 8GB + 16GB

I bought a 16GB ram as an upgrade, I don't want the 8gb to just collect dust so is it possible to combine these?

It should work, but they will all work at the speed of the slowest ram, which is 1600 mhz Cas 10. Too bad you didn't get the 16 gb the same speed as the 8 gb, your ram is now slower from 1866/cas 9 to 1600/cas 10.

What version of Windows are you running? Home Premium? Then it is limited to 16GB.

There's only way to find out, give it a shot. You'll need to use the DDR3-1600 settings or lower to attempt. Let us know how it goes!

+1 Give it a try, may need to raise the DRAM voltage + 0.05 or so as you'll be running the the 1866 at slow 1600 timings
