Try fitting a new CMOS battery as bignastyid suggested.
If that doesn't help, the motherboard is most likely faulty.

What do you mean "alter the battery"? You can reseat it or replace it, buy you can't really alter it without damaging something. Have you followed the manuals instructions for reseting the bios and clearing nvram?
