Tonight my 2 year old grabbed my acer external hard drive off my triple dresser and dropped it on the floor before I had a chance to grab it from him :( it came all apart and the usb came off. How can I reattach it? I gently plCe it back on the board but when I plugged it in it says to reformat. I know it needs to be secure to board too but can I recover data even? Help please

Hey Me1coolkittycat, welcome to the community. Having in mind the drive has already been out of the enclosure, then the warranty has probably been voided, so there's nothing to stop you from trying to connect it internally. It would be fortunate if only the external enclosure sustained physical damage, because if the drive is OK, it should work when connected internally to a computer via a SATA connection, so go ahead and try that. If it still wants to be formatted, then I'd recommend that you try accessing it via Linux Live CD/USB to see if it's recognized correctly and if you're able to get to your data. If this doesn't work as well, then you could try some of the data recovery options listed in this thread...

Hope that helps. Good luck and please keep me posted on your progress.

Solution
Hard drives must never be dropped as the moving internal parts within the metal casing are very fragile.

I'm afraid the actual metal drive has almost certainly been physically damaged internally when it was dropped, so repairing it's external bits is pointless, and data recovery will only be possible by sending it to a data recovery specialist (very expensive).
