I have a new A8-7650k build with new memory sticks. I wanted to test the new RAM thoroughly and found that MemTest86 only reports the total RAM minus what the GPU is using.

Is there any way to ALL of the sticks, not just part of them?

Solution
You would probably have to have a dedicated graphics card installed.

Your other choice is to lower the amount assigned to VRAM as low as possible to test as much as possible.

I see no other choices since the system can't test VRAM if it's using it (such as the video output to the display).

I believe there is (or should be) an option in BIOS which allows adjustment of memory allocated to integrated graphics (don't know the exact name of option to adjust). Set that value to minimum (might be around 64 MB), then run Memtest. After Memtest, set allocated memory to either 512 MB or 1 GB.

I was just commenting elsewhere that I'm confused by the way these system allocate video RAM.

There is a UMA Frame Buffer Size you can adjustin BIOS, but all that does is reserve video RAM. The rest of the unassigned RAM is still listed by Win7 as being shared.

I suppose I could test the RAM in another system, but I really don't like that either.

Edit: I wonder if this would work: run the test with as little video ram as possible and then reverse the slots the sticks are in and test again. I suspect that wouldn't work either though.

Thanks, brispuss, but MemTest boots from a USB stick or CD, not windows. The video ram size is set by the mobo. It really does look like there is zero way to test all the RAM in an APU system without an extra video card.

The MemTest people should really find a work around for that.
