I got tired of renting a modem from Comcast, so finally bought my own. The new modem has just one Ethernet port, which is used to run the Ethernet cable to the Apple Airport Express. Is there a device, like a splitter, that will offer me two Ethernet ports, or should I get a gigabit switch? My son wants to hard wire his xBox 360 to the Ethernet so that he has a stronger signal. Thanks.

Solution

Go to your local electronic store (or online store), and get an Ethernet switch. The LAN port on the Airport is 10/100 only, so gigabit switch would be an overkill.

Usually when you get a "modem" from Comcast, it's actually a gateway which means it has a modem, switch, and wireless router all in one. It seems like you just got a modem so now you need a switch or a router. A wireless router that you get will most likely have a switch integrated onto it (it will have several Ethernet ports if it has a switch in it). A router also has a wireless access point on it so you can connect wireless. A switch doesn't, so I would buy a router that has a bunch of Ethernet ports on it and you should be in ship shape condition.

If you bought your modem, most probably it is just a "modem", without router. If you tell the model, we can tell more.

From what I read in Airport Description, "it plugs into your modem", so it should be a router as well. Looking at the pictures, there is also a LAN Ethernet port. So, if you plug a switch in that LAN port, you can get your extra port.

It's a Motorola - Arris SURFboard 600 Series DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem. One Ethernet port, which runs cable to the Airport Express which serves as my WiFi router. Airport Express has just one Ethernet port, it's an older model. I see that they now make them with two ports. All I want to do is get a splitter, or a gigabit (if that works) and convert the one Ethernet port on the cable modem to two ports so my kid can hook up an Ethernet cable to his xBox 360 and I can still be using WiFi.
