A Gigabyte switch the first devices after your internet Modem

So I am planning on upgrading my network and I was wondering if I can use a Gigabyte switch as my first layer for all my internal network devices. I have a server room in the basement and having a router down there is not the best for the people who want to use it upstairs. I was wondering if you can take a CAT-6e Ethernet cable and route it upstairs for a router to utilize that way it does not have to be in the basement and my users suffer a bad wireless connection. Hope I can get some help. Thanks

Your router has to come straight after the modem and before the switch.

Alright I was not to sure and I wanted to clear that, but thank you. I guess I will have to figure out some other way to get a better Wifi signal across the house.

You could always run a long cable to the router and place it upstairs; then you would need another long cable back to the server from the switch.
