Hello, I am building a pc for a friend(it's more of a budget build). He does light 3D animation/design(nothing too heavy). The software he uses is Autodesk 3DS Max and Mudbox. The graphics card I was looking into was a GTX 960, however it only has 2GB of RAM. Another gpu I was looking at was an R9 280x. Which should he get?

Solution

there's an option for system or just graphics. Look again.

If it's purely for this purpose, consider the FirePro cards. The are tailored for supporting Autodesk graphics. However, the Geforce and Radeon cards you mention will work pretty well.

For a better suggestion, please give budget for build.

Kinda outta date .... but look at the 3DS Max graph and then look at the other pages in the review.....they (well most) all have Radeon and Fire Pro Cards in the scoring .... not so w/ 3DS Max

I would say the 970 is going to be the base point here.... never heard the discussion ever bring a 960 into play. And you want CUDA for all things AutoDesk / Adobe. If this is the main function of the PC, you want a Quadro.

Yes, I have used it before, but wasn't working yesterday....just tried on IE and it worked, then retried on Firefox and now working.

There are only 3 choices:

nVidia Quadro
AMD Fire Pro
nVidia GTX

Radeon is not an option for 3DS Max as per both THG testing link above and the AutoDesk GFX link above.... at that price range, your only choice is the 960 but given the performance, I think he will be disappointed.

OK here's the deal .... have him buy a MSI 970 for $320 .... then sell you the Witcher 3 game coupon to you at a $10 discount ($50).... net cost = $270 :)
