Significant CPU Increase out of nowhere

My CPU used to run idle 50-60c and on high load 70-80c. It is overclocked pretty high so the temps didn't bother me. I have an h80i liquid cooler. Today after getting a BSOD while gaming I found it was possibly the CPU. So I did a prime95 test to see if I could make it happen again. Only to see my CPU temps jump to 99c. I instantly freaked out and shutoff prime95. This has never happened before and I was wondering what could cause such a huge shift in temps.

Check the pump mounting to be sure it is still secure. Feel the hoses to be sure one is warmer and one is cooler. Check BIOS to be sure it is still set as you had it. Check the fans on the radiator to be sure they are both spinning.

Pump is still secure. Both fans are spinning. The BIOS has been untouched. The hoses feel the same to me but the pump should be working since idle temps are as they were.

If you put the system under load again and feel the hoses, one should be noticeably warmer than the other. Hot out, cool in. If there's no difference, or very minimal difference that is hard to detect, it may be that the pump isn't working or spinning too slowly.

Still both tubes feel the same however the temp for h80i does not change much at all. Here is a screenshot to show what I mean.
First is at idle. Second is max load. Both show the pump to be working.

I was able to view the pictures, and see now that the processor is the i5 760.

How much of an overclock are we talking here?
Are you still using the stock thermal paste that came with the H80i? If not, what thermal compound are you using? and last but not least, if you are using a different thermal compound, what method did you use to apply the compound?

Stock thermal paste which is the first thing I am going to try and fix. It's 1.2ghz overclocked and about .15 volts over stock. Can thermal paste wear out like that though as I said before recently everything was fine.

The stock thermal paste on the H80i is actually very good.

Have you done stability testing to make sure that your CPU is able to sustain that overclock without BSOD?

Also, what is the ambient temperature where your computer is?

Thats the h80i's temps not the cpu temp. Here is some pics including the temp.

The temperatures shown in the pictures are the temps of the H80i.

I just posted pics of the ambient temperature. As for stability I have been running with this overclock setting for about a year now with no issues whatsoever and under load temps of 70-85 which is high but fine given the fact I am overclocked so high. I know people have gotten higher clock settings on the same model CPU and I did a one hour prime95 stress test when I first set the clock settings. The settings should be fine. The only thing I can think of is that my CPU is giving out so it is running hotter or maybe my cooling block got loose somehow....or maybe my thermal paste isn't working best anymore. I am totally bewildered at this.

I believe the radiator but I cannot confirm.

That cpu gadget for windows 7. It might be off but not by much. Corsair Link is reporting about 95c which is still 10-20c higher than what I usually get.

Well, it sounds like you are going to remove the pump and clean of and replace the thermal paste. Although it's highly unlikely it has dried out in this short time. The fact that the temp changed so suddenly is what is unusual. Like something quit working properly. That was why I suspected the pump not spinning as it should.

But if the Corsair software is showing the coolant in the system as normal, then I can't understand how the core temps could be so high. Check with some other software like hardware Monitor.

If you feel like going thru the effort, remove the pump from the CPU temporarily*, and put the stock cooler back on. Then see if you can get those crazy high temps again. (Since you are going to reset the CPU to stock clocks)

If all is normal, at least you'll know the issue is with the AIO cooler.

* You don't have to uninstall the AIO. Just tie off the pump temporarily and disconnect the wiring.
