Dear Friends,

I was transferring some files from my PC hard disk to my external hard disk when suddenly, the power supply was cut, and the PC was shut off.

When I restored the power supply again, the external hard disk only shows up as Local Disk (i), and I can't access it. I have important work and project files on the HDD and my career is dependent on it. Hope someone can help show me how to recover the files please. Thanks in advance.

Relax.

I had the same problem. Go to search and type Disk Management. See if your External Hard disk is listed as RAW format.

If so, open a command prompt window and type this chckdsk command.

chkdsk [drive_letter]: /f

edit: it might take some time.

Hi Khanorak,

Yes, it shows as RAW in Disk Management. Is it chkdsk i:/f or chkdsk i: /f (with a space between colon and slash)? My drive letter is I. Tks in advance.

Hi Khanorak,

I have tried both, with and without space between colon and / => chkdsk i: /f and chkdsk i:/f.

Command prompt replied in both instances=> The type of the file system is RAW. CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.

Would you be able to let me know how I can proceed? Thanks.

P.S. Your solution started with the word "Relax" and that brought me great relief. :)

hmmm that's strange. Mine also showed as RAW. but chkdsk went on smoothly.

I am hopeful of one thing and that is the data is intact. Maybe a more learned member can shed some light on it.

Edit:
I think you should read This Link. See if it helps you.

Hi Khanorak,

Thanks for the link. Looks quite complicated as I am a not that strong in IT. Hope there will be some other members who have faced this and solved it OR some who may have the solution can share. Thanks.

Am currently running Easeus data recovery on the disk to see if I can transfer the data to another HDD and then reformat it. But it's only 10% scanning till now, after more than 7 hours. So, if it were to reach 100% completed scanning, I fear it may need 70 hours!!
