First the rig
Asus x79 deluxe mobo (refurb)
4820k cpu
32 gigs ram
Lepa cooler 240mm
Gtx 970 gigabyte windforce card

So after having issues with getting a clean install(over win 7) I purchased windows 8.1 pro (student)
Everything installs fine till I get to the video card. Upon loading up the video card software and auto update to current drive the system fails to reboot right. The system, on reboot gets to the window icon. The screen flickers then goes into dvi save mode (IE no signal from card). So I'm stuck with a blank screen and quite idling computer. After making a boot usb I tried restore points. NONE of them worked, same result on each reboot. Suggestions? I'm going to clean install AGAIN. should I just skip trying to install the nvidia software and just run the driver? Could it be a bios setting? Its about the only thing I can get into.

Note- Is it possible that the video card is running an old bios which is not working with the new win 8.1 drivers?

Solution
Reset CMOS. Unplug all keyboards mice usbs etc, and then remove the battery on the motherboard for about 5 mins. Put it back in and try again

I do not have the factory install disc. I went to gigabyte and Downloaded the drivers from them. The default install run. I think works but when updating the drivers causes the system to crash after reboot

It worked! to my surprise!. I just hit the reset on the motherboard and the system booted up. For a good install I went ahead and did another clean install.

After resetting CMOS

1. Clean install 8.1 from usb
2. Installed the bios driver packs one by one (rebooted after one)
3. grabbed the newest video driver build from the last update before the system crashed. (Newest build being 347.88.)
4. Everything works fine, thanks Bossyfins

Ok update on the strangeness. When using the DVI -D port the machine reboots to a dead screen. If I unplug the monitor andswitch to the DVI - I I get the Screen back. Once I log in I can switch the cable back and run native 1440p. Amy thoughts?
