Power needed for amd r9 290x lighting

Would I be able to power the MSI r9 290x lighting gpu with a 550w power supply without overclocking it? I know the website says they recommend 750watts but most people seem to recommend less.
I also run a i5 4670k (not oc'ed) cooled by an evo 212.
MSI's power supply calculator only suggests just under 500watts of power for a r9 290x and all my other components.

If you have a good quality PSU, and no OC, you should be fine.

Now, with this being said, what model PSU do you have, and how old is it?

The card itself draws up to 386 watts, and with your processor plus storage and other components such as fans a 550w unit would be cutting it very close.

I recommend you look into an at least 650w unit, this will provide you with a little but of headroom and allow for some OCing.
