I'm trying to put together a pretty good computer for under $3000. Right now it's sitting around $2600 which is good so I can put money towards a monitor. I'm pretty sure everything is compatible and should fit in the case, but I wanted to see if there was anything obvious that should be changed. I still have a little room in the budget, but I would want any upgrades have a decent cost/performance ratio. I'm trying to stick with black/red if possible, but performance is priority.

Did you know you could afford an i7-5820k comfortably without even making it more expensive?

Go with RCFProd's build. The 5820K should help with overall performance, and also if you'll ever need to render or edit. The 5820K is really worth it, and gets super close to the 5960X extreme edition. DDR4 RAM and X99 too!! Make a few changes to your preferences and it should be great!

The options are very mixed because the i7-5820k is considered more expensive in many situations. However, here we keep it at the same price. It's a win/win situation basically.

CPUBoss always creates some kind of confusion. Why does the i7-4790k score higher in that comparison? It's because the factory clock speed of the i7-4790k is 4.0 Ghz. The factory clock speed of the i7-5820k is 3.3 Ghz.

Overclock the i7-5820k to 4.0 Ghz and you'll have the same performance atleast.

The 5930K wrecks the 4790K on the multi-core benchmarks. Overclock it to 4GHz and you'll have amazing performance (non-overclocked 5960X standards). It seems like I really have to update my build. If it's within your budget, go for it! If not, then consider the 5820K.

Yeah I'm really liking that build. The main thing I'm wondering is if its worth it to just bump up to a 5930k. It is about $180 more but it fits in my budget still. Pretty sure I'm going with it.

I really like that the mobo matches gpu also. I think I saw some nice msi backplates that should look really nice on this.

If you have the budget for 5930k, then go for it.
It`s a better CPU, and it should take a lot more until you fell the need to upgrade to something else.
When it comes to CPUs and GPUs, it`s best to go with the most performant parts you can get IMO.

The 5930K has better overall performance, both single-core and multi-core. Also the 5930K can be easily overclocked to over 4.7GHz for even more performance. If it's within his budget, then why not? He did say that performance is the priority and I don't think he's gonna use 4 way SLI (I may be mistaken :))

Yeah I'm going to save up for a decent monitor next, but I want to focus on the computer first. I'll do some research and decide if I think the 5930 is worth it. I'm messing around with the build a bit. I did decide to change the case back to the trooper so that went up a little bit. If I do everything I'm thinking it comes out like this http://pcpartpicker.com/p/bFTh8d. Should be right around the budget, but I still have to look through and see what I might want to save on. I really appreciate the help and pointing out the x99 wasn't a huge difference.

I've got a couple of things regarding your changes

- Why the very expensive Corsair AX860? The G2 Supernova is one of the best power supplies around and saves you money. Better than the Corsair you've selected now.
- I think the same way about the case but that will vary for each individual. In my opinion the Phanteks Enthoo Pro is one of the best cases you can get for the price. If you like the look of the Trooper more though, that's your choice.
- The 5820k REALLY IS good enough. Basically, the 5820k is already overkill. With the 5930k I would say you are wasting money. You don't need anything more than the 5820k, especially for your purposes you would see absolutely no improvement if you take the 5930k instead.

You could possibly save on the cooler and the PSU. Something like a H80i or GT should be enough, as the new Haswell-E cpus are realy efficient. You could also save money on the PSU and get a better one for less. The SuperNova in my PC is great, and I would definitely recommend it to you. Maybe a bit more powerful one though. I guess you could save the $150 on the 5930K and swap it for a 5820K. But it depends on what you'll be using this build for: rendering and editing, or 4K gaming?? If you're doing both, the 5930K should be super.

Yeah I've looked it over and I think I will be going with the 5820k.
I'm pretty set on the trooper case. I really like the look and the handle.
The power supply I will probably change. I mainly had the corsair AX since it had good reviews and red lettering.(lol)
I wasn't sure what cooler I should get with 2x980 and now probably overclocking the 5820k. The difference between a H100i and H105 was about 10 bucks so I figured I get the bigger one and it also has the colored bit that I can swap to red. I see the h80i is a bit cheaper though and maybe worth considering.
