Hi,

I'm looking for an upgrade, currently thinking between the 780ti and 970 as I can get the 780ti for £250, which is cheaper than 970 which starts around £270~ for the models I'm interested in. What do you think? Considering the 780ti benches slightly higher is it worth getting the 970 anyway? I'm not bothered about power usage or anything like that, only worried about how loud the 780ti reference is. Or would getting a good overclocking 970 and matching or increasing performance of the 780ti be a better idea for £40 more~.

I would really like to wait until the new cards 980ti etc. are released for prices to drop further but I have no patience.

Thanks in advance.

The difference between GTX970 and GTX980 is only about 10% as long as you do hit the infamous 3.5GB VRAM limit on the GTX970.
If you are playing only on fullHD, I do not think will really need GTX980.
If your current pc info is up2date, you will definitely see a big improvement from your current HD5870 by either going GTX970, GTX780Ti or GTX980.
GTX780Ti is also a nice option if you can get it really cheap. That is a good price for GTX780Ti.
GTX780Ti is faster than GTX970 but consumes quite a lot more power.

nVidia should update thec compatibility to directx 12 all the way down to GTX4xx, if I understood it correctly.
I think you should not worry about the directx 12 much.

About having or wanting to wait,
there will be always better...

i would get nvidia gtx 980 because it supports directx 12 and i would get windows 10 when it comes out because it will support directx 12 too so you will have a super powerful pc

AFAIK, 780ti also has directx 12 support

I would tend to agree with rolli - there are 970's that can outperform the 780ti like the EVGA's SSC ACX 2.0 model: solid overclock, decent cooler. If you can limp along with what you have, there will inevitably be a price drop once they announce a new GPU series. The 780ti is more than enough performance for 1080p gaming except for games with additional texture effect stacks like Skyrim or trying to run Nvidia surround across 3 displays

Many cards will support directx12 not just the new cards. And yes, with the free win10 upgrade when it comes out, don't see why somebody wouldn't do it.

Yeah, definitely not a good time to upgrade at the moment. I think I may have to limp along for couple months or I will regret it later

there will be always better newer GPU in the next generation.
I will leave the decision about which one to get or if you want to wait completely up to you.

dont buy any graphics just yet i would wait untill windows 10 shows up because some graphic cards that support direct x11 and they will be updated to direct x12 will cause some bugs, wait untill windows 10 shows up then see for the gtx 980
