ASUS R9 290 DirectCU II OC in Crossfire (not 290x)

Hey everyone. I've been struggling to find information on the ASUS R9 290 DirectCU II OC in Crossfire. What I am curious about is how well they would perform in 4K gaming with two of them, would they compete with the upcoming 390x? I have nearly completed my build ordering parts singularly as they come on sale. So far I have:


And now it all boils down to the crowning Jewel, the video card. I have been mulling over this last piece for a solid month. Do I buy the asus R9 290 DirectCU II OC and then buy another down the road for 4k? Do I hate my life and just wait another two months for the 390x (And i would rather wait for the non-reference cards so even longer) or the GTX 970 has been on my mind lately as I see them dropping in price. However I have read the 970's arent nearly as good as the 290's in higher resolution. Im so conflicted please help! Here is my rig so far:
