Hi,

So Im building budget gaming PC for my nephew and he doesn't have much money, I saw a local market that sells i3 4150 and g3258 with close prices, I wanted to get the i3 due to higher clock speed and HTT but I read that you can overclock the Pentium and will get higher performance than the i3, so what do you think? and If I should go with the Pentium what chipest Mobo should I get, btw he loves games, CoD AW, Dota 2, AC Series.. etc :)

After reading about the Pentium I wanted to replace my i3 3210 :p

thanks

Personally, I'd go with the i3. It will better at general computing and applications, no question there. And in games, if you have a reasonably capable GPU, the i3 has been known to keep up with i5 and FX 8 core chips depending on i3 model, whether the game is threaded and/or CPU/GPU bound and what GPU you have as well as your in game settings. Turning features and settings up, if you have a half decent GPU, may actually be quite helpful since it will drive much of the load onto the GPU and off of the CPU. Of course, regardless of GPU model, you'll have better frames and smoother results with a better processor, but there are plenty of folks who have entirely respectable gaming performance with a good GPU and an i3, or even a Pentium...
That's not quite true, Pentium does overclock very well and pawns it's competitors like Athlon, but I can't see it edging an i3. i3 is in the league with FX 6 (which i3 indeed edges out). Any H97 board would be good for the build, but if budget is limited, B85 or H81 are other options as well.

PS. Only G3258, which's an Anniversary edition, has unlocked multiplier and can OC, no older model can OC.

Also keep in mind that in order to overclock that Pentium to any degree that allows it's performance to shine, you'll also need to add a decent aftermarket cooler. Don't try overclocking it on stock cooling or you'll have no end of thermal issues.

there is a huge sale on the i3? as an i3 4150 owner, how is gaming on high settings? on newly games??

and newer games are multi cores dependent , so HTT will help more than better single core Pentium , correct?

Exactly. Pentium is dual core, by the way.

yes, I know, but If a game consumes 90% on the G CPU then it will lag on running background stuff in windows, but the HTT can handle the background stuff allowing games to use CPU alone. No Sharing is caring ;)

If you want only over-clocking then you can go for G3258, In some tasks and gaming it performs better than mentioned i3. But now-a-days i3-4150 is better because of 4-threads and hyper-threading. Also i3-4150 has little high frequency, supports RAMs of 1600 frequency, some new instruction needed for new and upcoming apps and better built-in graphic card.
If you want to run multiple tasks better and wants to play newly games like Farcry 3, Dragon Age Inquisition etc. then these kinds of games needs minimum dual-core but with 4 threads, so for that reason you should go for i3-4150.

Personally, I'd go i3 as I said. If you play a title that wants to see more cores, the Pentium is gonna be a pig no matter what the overclock is at.
