I'm upgrading the cpu in my Dell Inspiron 570 to a Phenom 945 and the 95w heatsink and fan. I've never used artic silver before so could someone advise how thick a layer to put between the cpu and the heatsink? If I'm on the wrong track and shouldn't be using it, definitely tell me that. :wahoo:

Arctic Silver 5 is a very effective and popular thermal compound, there is no reason I'm aware why you shouldn't use it. There are a few methods used for application of thermal compound but the idea is to get the thinnest layer possible. Some prefer to place a small dab (about the size of an uncooked grain of rice) on the CPU and let the pressure of the heatsink spread the compound, others use a credit card to spread a thin layer then put on the heatsink. Both are valid methods, simply a matter of preference.
