I'm trying to update my BIOS because of some error involving my RAM. But when I enter trhe Utility, it won't detect the .CAP file to update the BIOS.

Motherboard: ASUS M5A99X EVO
Tried both FAT32 and NTFS for USB
Using Windows 8.1

Could anyone help me?

I just used that Flash 2 Tool in BIOS and had good luck with it AFTER un-installing the AI Suite III.

frankly, i'd un-install the AI Suite III and leave it un-installed. There have been a number of issues with it's coding being defective and causing issues, documented over on the microsoft download center forums. There's an AI Suite cleaner that raja@asus recommended using after un-installing the suite - i don't have a link to it, but in the ASUS Motherboard sticky thread raja posted a link to it - he mentioned it in the first few pages of the thread iirc

I had some similiar issues with bios installing corrupted, but didn't have any issues locating the CAP file. Just to be sure, have you done the obvious and renamed the CAP file, ie when you extract it it's titled something like Z97M-Plus-2605.CAP, and needs to be renamed as Z97MPLUS.CAP

as above poster said, put it on your HD as well as on a FAT32 formatted USB.

For the heck of it, i'd clear CMOS before trying to update - instructions will be in your mobo manual, fairly simple to do and will only require you to reset the time & date in BIOS when you reboot

Ok, thanks for advice. I'll try that. I did rename the file.

EDIT
Well I managed to update the BIOS, but I still have the RAM problem:
I have 8GB PC3-12800 (1600MHz) Intel Extreme Masters Memory 2x 4GB sticks installed, but only 1 seems to work.
When checking my PC specs on Windows it says 8GB installed, but only 3.96 available. The BIOS says there's only 4GB, but it does show that 2 DIMM slots are filled with 4GB each. Anyone able to help with that?

First time posting btw, tell me if you need more info/specs

Can you please go into specifics on how you updated the bios? I've been trying for hours and can't figure it out. I have the same mobo

when you say it only recognizes 4 GB, are your running windows 7 32bit?

if not, then pull one ram stick and see if system still recognizes 4 gb, then the other stick putting the first one removed back in
if system doesn't show any ram or doesn't boot, then you've identified your back ram stick

That doesn't work here on this p8h61-M LE/csm mobo. Right price, works with my i5 3570 but this has turned into a nightmare.

I renamed after by removing all "-" 's, and removing the bios versoin at end '1411 .cap

I had no trouble with asrock, so simple now this headche with and not sure I'll be repeating this product.

Unless I missed something but I'm sure I did not, and given asus page says not one word about this related to flash '2' bios, they are low on my tech list atm.

Flash formatted fat32 ofc so its not that and shows up in bios Tool area just fine.

So, whats , why isn't this working >?
thx

I have P9X79 PRO and had similar problem. Turns out that at one point asus changed bios format from ROM to CAP. And you need to install "BIOS Converter" from ROM to CAP. Instruction are here:

https://www.asus.com/au/support/FAQ/114645/

To download BIOS Converter for P9X79 PRO I had to go to "Driver & Tools" on of my motherbord, select "Others" for OS, and then choose "BIOS-Utilities".

The bios converter will adopt your BIOS, its not for changing files ROM to CAP. Once this is done, then you can install bios updates in CAP format in the same way as done before in ROM format.

Hope this helps.
