Seems a common problem. WD Passport Ultra worked ok for a month now transfers data at 150KB/Second....... Yes I have swapped ports, swapped cables, swapped PCs and Laptops. Data shows on the WD. I can run a movie .......if I want to have it to freeze every few seconds while it buffers the data........

Welcome to the community, lordgeoff6009!

I'm sorry to hear about the slowness of your WD My Passport :( , such behavior is unusual and I'd suggest to back up the data from the drive ASAP if you can still access it. After the troubleshooting steps you've already taken, I'd recommend testing the drive using WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics tool.
It will tell us what exactly is the health of the drive and give us details about the SMART status.
Here's a link to the software: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=4BEfZf
Make sure you pass the quick and the extended test, I'll be here waiting for your results.
(Be patient while doing the extended test, it might take some time.)

Keep me updated!

Backup data is not an option., 1TB would take weeks based on the current data transfer rate. I copied a movie from the WD drive to a USB drive. size 1.6GB and it took 6 hours. Copied from USB to C: is took approx 1 minute. The transferred Movie file worked ok played on the laptop.
Have down loaded WD diagnostics from your link. Smart status was a fail. Am running extended test now. Will post result when(if) it finishes.

Unfortunately, it seems like your WD My Passport has failed and there's not much you can do about it! :(
I strongly recommend contacting our tech support and let them know about the issue. If the drive is still within the warranty period, they should be able to provide you with a replacement. I hope you have a backup of the data on that external, though.

Did the full scan. after a couple of hours it came up with the message "Too many bad sectors. Scan halted" Yes looks like WD Passport Ultra 2TB has failed after a month. Cost $AUD150 but a cheap lesson. Don't buy WD Passport Ultra. It cannot be relied on to store data long term. This confirms what I have read on other Forums. Thanks for your advice re warranty replacement. Don't want a replacement as I cant afford to lose my data again.
Will stick with Seagate as they have been very reliable for the past few years.
Cheers.
Geoff

This is a warranty issue. All HDDs fail sooner or later, and random chance happens. This can happen a month in or ten years in, and a sample size of one (with significant selection bias, I might add) is not particularly useful on comparing HDDs.

If you're worried about the data, then don't store it in one place. This has been the case for at least two decades and I still don't know why people haven't caught on to the fact that stuff breaks.

Oh, and before you accuse me of working for WD, I'd say much the same thing about Seagate and Toshiba.

Dear, Geoff!

I'm truly sorry to see you so disappointed but as @Someone Somewhere mentioned the best way to protect yourself is to do regular and multiple backups because stuff break. :/
However, your WD My Passport should still be covered by the warranty, so I'd recommend contacting our tech support and send out an RMA request. They should be able to provide you with a replacement.
