Suddenly 8gb total 3.9 usable?

Hey I have my Ripjaw x gaming ram and its always been fine, but I noticed this morning windows says its 8gb total and 3.9 usable. Ive tried taking it out and in, putting it in a different slots, and doing memory diagnostic and nothing has found errors..

Its saying it has 3.97 Total and 8.72 virtual..

One stick is dead. Try memtest86 or testing or try on stick at a time to find the dead stick or slot.

Alright i'l just contact Aria tomorrow, I have a 10 year warrenty on the ram so I should beable to get a new stick as it just died on its own

Also if I keep the dead stick in would it damage my computer? Should I take it out?

Yeah, it was a 2 ram set so im hoping that I can keep one of my sticks, maybe they wil let me send 1 back, they might even give me 2 back when I give them the 1 then il get a free 4gb stick

But try memtest86 first. According to your screenshot, the PC is recognising 8GB of ram.

Need to reinstall/restore windows.

Also try using only one stick (one by one) to power on your PC.

Well since the screenshot says its detecting 2 sticks so it may be a software issue. there is no harm in restoring the PC to a recent restore point.

Yeah, I get your point. Or maybe Speccy isn't very reliable. Use HWMonitor instead and use Memtest86 to check whether there is an issue with the RAM.

Yes agreed, either memtest86 or he can also try one stick at a time and check for hardware issues.

This will never be a software issue! The bios sees two sticks at boot time and reads the specification from the spd chip. That's why Windows sees 8GB. Next step is to write some Byte to the sticks and that's the point where one of the sticks is recognized as dead.
