I have three (3) USB flash drives (one Sandisk and two generic) that work fine on three different machines running Win 7. BUT plug any of them into my grandson's new Dell laptop with Win 8.1 and the drive does not open. Happens with all three drives, and all USB ports. Other USB devices (e.g. wireless mouse) load and work fine.
Device manager says no driver is loaded - error 28. But asking Windows to find a driver does not work, whether on the machine or via Internet. I even uninstalled all the USB buses and allowed Windows to reinstall -- the problem persists. There are no other problems with the machine.
I see from the web that many people have peculiar issues with Win 8, but I have not found an answer to this specific problem. Dell has not answered my emails regarding the issue. Drivers for generic flash keys SHOULD be built into Windows, as in past versions, but apparently not.
Any ideas please?
