Currently I have an AMD FX-9590 4.7GHz 8-Core and I was thinking of switching to an Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor, but my question is:

Is it really worth it going from 4.7GHz to 4.0GHz?
Going from a 8-Core to a 4-Core???

I know Intel may have a better reputation, but my main goal is speed/performance.
I DO NOT play games, my rig is for video editing and photos.

So I'm really confused if I'll benefit from my switching and how???
I appreciate any input.
Thank you.

I'll give you my opinion. Buying a new motherboard and CPU to see a slight increase when it comes to video editing & photo editing is not worth it. When it comes to exporting the CPU is the main factor but again it doesn't make the price difference worth the upgrade. 32 or even 64 GB of RAM will speed everything up depending on project file sizes and proper storage configuration
Each number seperate drive

#1 SSD: Programs & OS
#2 HDD: Media/Footage/Audio
#3 SSD: Scratch disk
#4 HDD: Exporting
GPU: CUDA accelerated effects

This will be the real difference when it comes to workstations, not the 9590 vs I7 4790k speaking from experience.

It's what I have:

250GB SSD for OS (Win 7 64-Bit)
1TB HDD 7200RPM for storage
16GB Ram DDR3-2133

I'm not against the others in any way but to switch over from a already strong processor to another strong processor, is not worth it unless you need to render long clips and on a daily basis (professionally), because then time is money and every minute you save is valuable, and it's then a business expense and not just an upgrade. Photoshop uses a bit of your CPU but it takes advantage of a scratch disk & lots of RAM too, video editing for live previews for instance take up a ton of RAM depending on project size. I7 4790k is obviously a much faster processor, but is it worth it?

The Intel obviously beat the AMD here but not by much, minutes will be saved but if you start rendering a video and then go shopping or whatever and come back and it's completed, you won't really need a 4790k.

Hundreds of dollars is a little over exaggerated. With ~110w average power draw difference for 4 hours a day, it would end up at about $80 a year with german electricity cost of $0.40 per kwh. So more like $20-30 a year in the us.
