Huge increase in the size of Windows 8.1

Seems overnight my windows directory jumped to 23.7 GB. I've searched for any huge files that may have gotten lost in there but no luck. Two directories concern me
First System32\DriverStore = 8.06 GB
Secondly WinSxS = 6.83 GB with 22,135 Folders and 92,138 files.
This is on a 64 GB SSD boot Drive so there not a lot of room to spare.
It seems to be 7-8 GB larger than normal.
Any ideas?

Did you turn off or decrease the size allocated to System Restore?

I would use at least 120gb. Some stuff downloads and can only install on the OS drive.

Have you moved downloads to a HDD? And chosen 'Custom Installation' for all software so far?

Don't use system restore.
Downloads go to HDD
Installs go the HDD only a handful to SSD because of limited space all are custom installs.

assuming you are talking about c:\windows not c:\
my Windows 8.1 pro
c:\windows
26.7GB
149295 files
30,474 folders
--------------------

windirstat
spacesniffer
and similar can tell you where biggest files & folders are

try running disk cleanup

and
ccleaner

and see if there are any files not needed

size of restorepoints and recycle bin can be reduced

maybe the windows updates or installing any windows applications from store.
or temporary files.

I'm having the same issue. I deleted all system restore data, defragged and optimized my c: drive multiple times, and ran ccleaner. Yet, the problem persists.

I can see (using windirstat) that Windows 8.1 is taking nearly 11 GB of my just-24 GB hard drive, and I'm losing my mind. I have deleted all apps and really stripped down my tablet's functionality to bare bones, yet I still have just 255 MB available on my c: drive, not even enough to install the latest Windows 8.1 Update.

Can anyone help?
