why would they release a motherboard for skylake chips before even broadwell has come to desktops...

asus already do a z97 ROG mobo which is socket 1150 and will support upcoming broadwell so get that if you want the latest thing, we will be lucky to get skylake in 2016 with the current state of things

Asus will release 1151 motherboards with the Z170 chipset, but they cannot say when since Intel is being very tight with that information. I expect Skylake K's to be out before the end of the year, and possibly late in the year. Manufacturers already have samples and already have boards ready to go if they are worth their salt.

With the new chipset, I'd expect ROG MBs to be out shortly after the release, allowing feedback from boards 'in the wild.'

Personally, I'm waiting for an mITX 1151 board with an available M.2 gen3 x4 slot

CPU chip makers send big shipments of their not-yet-launched chips to MANY mainboard manufacturers, website owners, etc. so they could test their chips on their and hardware (for the manufacturers part) and for the website owners to bench their chips. ASUS has announced over 21 boards with support for Intel Skylake chips (not all are Z170 chipsets). When ASUS has displayed a few say 2 or 3 of their LGA1151 mobos, the version you're looking for should be out in the market around this September when Intel will release their new CPUs.
I'm waiting for the ASUS Z170 Sabertooth, I know how it feels. :D
