Hi,

I'm looking to build a gaming PC that has some future proofness, but this is also a semi budget build (1000€ max). My current two options for the CPU are:
-Intel Core i5 4460
-Intel Core i5 4690k
I would like to know long it would take for either of these two to start bottlenecking any GPUs (in the future)?I know that by getting the 4690k I can overclock it and make it last longer but I'm not sure if it's worth it (just to get some more future proofness) as I could use that money to get a better graphics card (right now). How much longer will the 4690k last (before it starts to bottleneck GPUs) versus the 4460?

Thank you

Solution
It will be a long time before either of those start bottlenecking any GPU unless either Nvidia or AMD have secret technology in the pipeline that can only be used with octa-core CPUs or something.

I'd say the 4690K could go for AT LEAST another 5 years before anything starts giving it trouble. I'm sure the 4460 would fall in the same time frame.

i5 4690k is the flag ship in the i5 series.,it should not bottleneck any single GPU.

IMO the i5 4690k is the better choice since you can overclock it in the future if you need more power,But both processors will do fine for gaming since games aren't very demanding.

So I have a 2500k initially rated at 3.3ghz and if I had stuck with that my computer would be slow in comparison to more modern processors. Overclocked at 4.6ghz it decimated all 3 years ago and still competes within the top 5% of gaming PC's out there. No bottlenecking here yet.

Know that by purchasing a top of the range Intel chip and overclocking it will secure you at least 5 years of good performance, most of them great.

As for the graphics card market; it moves along alot quicker but I doubt there will be any bottlenecking issues until single GFX cards are running 3 4k panels.

Assassins Creed Unity
Far Cry 4
Battlefield 4
Battlefield Hardline
Witcher 2
Dragon Age Inquisition

That's already 6 games
If you know anymore let me know... :kaola:

I said ALL as In ,I meant 100% load.

I've played BF4 and hardline and my i7 4790k never uses over 20-35% load on CPU..,A good CPU is important however a GPU is always going to MAKE or BREAK the gaming experience.

The thread asks if i5 4660/4690k will bottleneck ANY GPU and i Say they both have enough juice to use any GPU.:p

My i5 750 ran and can still run even current games well if I drop my R9 290 into it, and that CPU is now 5 years old.
You're more likely to run into a graphics bottleneck than a CPU one and if you're on a single 60Hz display it's still more likely to be the final bottleneck, because regardless of how fast the system is, the monitor can only show 60 FPS...Unless you have a 120Hz or faster display that is. ;)
I opted for the i5 4690K, it's running stock ATM because there's no need to OC, but the 'K' means in a few years time I WILL be overclocking to extend the system life, just as I did with the i5 750, which is as much future proofing as anyone can do with a PC!
