So. I have a quite expensive HP Envy 17 which was given to me as a gift (not my first choice for a laptop). The Envy has a Core i7-4700MQ CPU and a GT 840M GPU. I am also just about to purchase the parts for a custom build. (found here: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/WPP4hM) As you can probably tell, it's very budget oriented, however, I think it should hold up on most games with medium to high settings at 1080p. My main question, however, is which one of these computers would be more powerful playing intensive games. The Envy obviously has an edge with the i7, but I'm pretty sure the 260X would outperform the 840M any day. I know that in general, graphics power matters more than processing power, but I'm not sure whether the Pentium in the custom build will be able to run modern games very well. I do know that several new games for the PC won't load at all on a dual-core system, but I'm pretty sure there are work-arounds. Anyways, my main question is which one will be better for gaming.

Solution
This is kind of difficult to say as the cpu will be too weak for most games but the gpu will be able to play most of the games that is out in the desktop. I would upgrade the cpu if you can as the laptop will not last as long. Plus hp are not very good at their cooling when gaming.
