So my External hdd won't initialize, gives following error: "The request failed due to fatal device hardware error"

So I ran diagnostics with WD Lifeguard Diagnostics, both Quick test and Extended test passed, but when trying to write zeroes it outputs this...

Test Option: WRITE ZEROS
Model Number: WD My Book 1140
Unit Serial Number: XXXXXXXXXXXX
Firmware Number: 1003
Capacity: 0.00 GB
SMART Status: Not Available
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 20- Delete Partitions error!
Test Time: 23:39:26, April 05, 2015

Though no partitions shows up on the device...

Is there any hope for my disk? If so... any way to fix this?

Just for * and giggles, try running Seatools for Windows on the drive. Drive brand is irrelevant. Run the Short DST (Drive self test) and the Long generic.

It might just be a corruption of the partition tables, and not the drive itself.

Hi there virtux,

I would advise you to double check the connections(different USB cable, different USB port, make sure the power cable is firmly connected) and retest the drive.
If you get similar results, then there may be something wrong with the enclosure.
Is the drive still under warranty? If so, it may be a good idea to contact WD's Support and eventually RMA it.

Also, it will not hurt testing it/writing zeros with some other tools as well.

While the WD guy knows his business, and all his suggestions are good and relevant, I've yet to see a drive that passed testing but couldn't find the partitions, and ended up being due to a cable or the enclosure. To my experience, which I'm sure is more limited than his, if there is an issue with a cable or the enclosure hardware, they generally don't pass testing. It's still worth it to try though as there are a million ways an electronic device can play tricks on your or outright fool you.
