Hello, I am shopping for a reliable hard drive and I am looking at two models:

Hitachi Ultrastar 7K3000 2TB ($69.95)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5AD1P08389

and Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 2TB ($249.95)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0AJ2TR7220

As you can see, the prices are vastly different from each other, and yet looking at the specs, I can't see a difference! Please tell me, is the Deskstar model significantly better than the Ultrastar model? I am worried that I am missing something that makes the Deskstar much faster in performance.

Hey Matthew,

Thanks for the reply, but I am still confused about one thing: is there a speed difference? The document you attached specifically mentions that the Deskstar is meant for gaming, but there aren't any benchmarks or stats to show its superiority of speed to the same model Ultrastar. When I tried looking up benchmarks online, I couldn't find any information on the Ultrastar. This is my primary concern between the two drives. Thanks!

I dont know. It sounded to me that its a reliability under heavy work load thing. Ultrastar for servers and enterprise use where it will be reading and writing constantly 24/7 and Deskstar for home/office use.

I dont think that using the word "Gaming" means is going to be quicker rather than just a descriptive word for a typical use.

If you want pure speed get a SSD
