I have a 1 GB GDDR5 Graphics card and have 6 GB of DDR3 RAM installed in my machine. My mobo can only address 8 GB of RAM. If i upgrade to 8 GB of system RAM, will something happen to my GPU?

It shouldn't, as far as I know. The GPU will use system RAM, but I don't believe that the system uses GPU RAM. This may change with Heterogeneous System Architecture, but your presumably older motherboard won't have that, of course. As the GPU RAM is independent, there shouldn't be a problem, unless you try it and there is, but I doubt it.
