Greetings,

I have to replace the motherboard on a Gateway MX8711. The current part number is 31PA6MB0042, but I also see a part number 31PA6MB0090 that is also compatible. Luckily they are both cheap.

Which one is better in terms of RAM and allowable processor speed? Also, side question - do any of these boards allow Bluetooth capability? I see that the MX8711 does mention it per the user manual, but I cannot locate anywhere on the board where a Bluetooth chip would go.

Thanks!

yes there are wifi+BT combo cards are available. but its not recommended to fix into an incompatible laptop.
there are many things to consider while changing a different wireless card like -> its bios , software , size etc.
also your laptop does not support BT by default. it will not work if you even buy a wireless combo card.

as said before, if you need BT. the best way is to connect a external Bluethtooth adapter. its avail for low cost itself. it may work for your laptop. you can connect devices with it.

You can use any one of the motherboard. both are same specification with different part no. that will mostly change due to different stock update or for identification.

only some of the Gateway MX8711 laptops has a bluetooth. not all the models.
if you need to use BT. you can try to connect a external Bluethtooth adapter. its avail for low cost itself. it may work for your laptop.

rkumaran,

Thanks for the shout back. Just a bit confused on the BT. If both boards are the same, the 0042 doesn't appear to have a BT slot. Do you know (or can you point me to a reference) where the 0090 does? I'm confused, no offense, when you said some MX8711's have Bluetooths, not all, but from what I gather these are the only 2 mobos available for this model.

Feel free to school me - I'm interested!

Yes that's correct. Weird that the user manual mentions it and there's an LED icon on the laptop itself, and I was chatting with someone via craigslist that has the same model and has built-in BT. Hmmm. Not doubting your answer, but it's just plain odd. As a comparison, when I needed to fix a Dell, all of the service manuals are out there and I wasn't as puzzled, but with Gateway, yeah good luck.

Well, weird question but go with it - are there integrated WiFi-BT cards that have the Mini PCIe format?

The current Wifi card in there now is a Broadcom BCM94311MCG, so if it has that format and size of this card I am game.

Thanks again!

Thank you again for your response - looking forward to hear about the possible integrated card.
