Hi, I picked up a Dell Optiplex gx620 very cheap. Its got Pentium D, 3gb ram and 160gb HDD. I had an Iomega 1tb nas which had another 2tb HDD connected to it. The nas failed so I thought best way is to get a small PC to run and connect my hdd's. Like a Home Theatre PC. The gx620 only has one HDD bay. So at the moment I've got one external USB enclosure attached. This needs its own power source of 12v. It means extra plugs. I know the simplest solution would be an extension lead and I flick one switch to turn everything on. But me being me I have to think of another way haha. Could I take power from the dell PSU and make a 12v socket in the PC. So all I have to do is plug in the external USB enclosure to power it. Seems very simple as people make bench top power supply from PSU's but I've not found any information online to say that someone has done it before. So very simply I turn the PC on and the external USB turns on with it using the same PSU power. Am I asking a silly question?

I have tried doing the same on my Intel DH67BL motherboard but some how blow it. Instead of powering the (western digital) external hdds through the wall power supply, I pulled up 12V from PSU. I am not sure why it happened but now all the USB 2.0 have gone bad. There was a lot of smoke from the cpu as soon as I turned it on.
