Will defragmenting a storage drive lag my OS

I have Windows 7. I am wary about non-SSDs. Why go slower and louder? But they're expensive and I am getting tired of micromanaging my space. Would defragging cause lag if I were using files and programs not on the drive being defragmented?

Would games on a the non SSD lag greatly when run by a SSD OS?

Defragging a hard drive consolidates space into a more continuous area to reduce latency.

Because a SSD has virtually no latency, it does not need defragmentation and should be turned off.

If you have games on the hard drive you probably do not need to defrag them. The initial game load should have put all of the game files in a continuous space. Defrag at most once if they are on a hard drive.
The OS is the best thing to put on the ssd.

If budget is limited, you can store lots of games on a hard drive.
But, ssd's are getting cheaper. If you only run a handful of games, 240gb ssd will likely suit you.

i'd have the ssd drive with my OS on, because i'd be using it while the mechanical drive was defragmenting. i was just curious about whether the mechanical drives defragementing while i was using the OS (on ssd) would cause a lag in Windows and the work I was doing on drive 1-- since Windows would be simultaneously be working and allocating resources to modify drive 2.
