Only Haswell processors really perform better with higher speed RAM. DDR3 2400 will gain you as much as 30% over DDR3 1600 in some situations that are memory limited. That is at stock speeds.

Ivy Bridge did slightly better with DDR3 1866/2133 but the integrated memory controller was completely revised with Haswell and it did not matter as much with the older architectures.

AMD has a much less advanced memory controller and tops out with DDR3 1866 being about as much as it can handle. There would be very little difference with 1600 and 1866 on AMD.
