Hi there, I got a problem, which seems not to be rare with new Haswells...

My specs

Intel Core i5 i4690k
ASRock z97 PRO4
Cooler: SilentiumPC Fortis 2 XE 1226

On stock, 3.5 GHz clocking, temperarature while using LinX reaches 79 Celsius (75 when case opened), which seems to be really high. When I tried OC to x38, temperatures are almost 85-86 C, and when I use auto tuning to 4 GHz, occt with avx stops when temperature on one core reaches 89 Celsius.

And now is the question - what's wrong? Did I buy unlocked processor with no possiblity to overclock? Or maybe I did something wrong with the cooler instalation? I can't believe the temps are so high...

Thanks in advance for your help.
Mike

AVX on is a unrealistic test of the processor. 79C does seem awfully high for stock settings. What voltage was the CPU running at during that test?

Suztera is right, the automatic settings and automatic overclocking tools generally apply way too much CPU core voltage. Usually stock maximum is around 1.2 volts. Maximum normal core voltage is about 1.3, 1.35 is possible with extreme cooling solutions.

Yeah, the fan is spinning. I applied thermal paste attached to cooler and I think the cooler is close enough to the IHS. About voltages...stock bios setting is auto, but i also tried to set it fixed as low as I could to keep stability, and that didnt really help.

Well, I just tested auto tuning to check every available option in BIOS - changed voltages, clocking, etc. Everything is the same. On OCCT without AVX i have max temp 69-70 C on stock clocking. :/

My i5 4690K at stock clock with a Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus (the one before the Evo) doesn't even get over 60C using the Intel Burn Test, which is one of the most savage Linpack tests out there.
Sounds like the CPU cooler isn't properly attached or you've forgotten to take the tape off the base before installation.
Either way, pop the cooler off and check how you have installed it, Haswell chips aren't that hard to cool.
