Running out of ideas:
- Insert windows CD, boot, loads installation files, "starting windows", before the fireflies it reboots itself

Need fresh install of 64 bits to upgrade from 32 bits system so can;t do upgrade.

Tried the USB stick trick, same thing happens

I "cloned" the new SSD to test the hardware and the cloned new SSD works fine (with the old 32 bits SW)

Tried removing the CD before next re-boot but it just complains about a non-bootable disk ( or just loads existing OS)

Read all the blogs...nothing helps....any ideas appreciated

Dell Latitude E4310 (i7 with 8 MB RAM), new disk is Samsung Pro 256 MB, trying to install windows 7 pro 64 bits from an original Dell Reinstallation DVD.

thanks

Sounds like a driver issue of some kind, or a hardware problem. I'd try booting to safe mode with networking and running windows update or manually update the motherboard or laptop drivers from the OEM's product page, while in safe mode (with networking).

Thanks...windows update won;t work as I'm trying to do a new 64 bits install (upgrade/update won;t work in existing 32 bits OS).

I called Dell and run diagnostics, test quits the instant it reaches the 2nd memory bank and laptop just restarts. I tried swapping memory modules ( 2 x 4 MB) but it always scans fine the first bank, and fails when starting the 2nd bank.

BIOS recognizes both memory modules ( 8 GB) , never had a problem ...so in my limited experience I would think troubleshooting does not point to the memory modules ( as they both scan fine when in "bank A") .

ANY IDEAS HERE APPRECIATED!!

About 1 year ago I upgraded to the 2 x 4 GB current memory buying from "memory4all" ...2 days ago I ordered "Dell original certified" memory for this particular Dell E4310. I will give this a try and see what happens.

Next thing is checking all the OEM drivers and make sure they are the latest...

turns out "dell certified memory" fixed the problem...now I get past the butterflies and setup continues.

Interesting, BIOS checks out OK the RAM but does not let you install a fresh version of windows 7 64 bits .

ja ....and Dell wanted me to charge me $256+tax to change the mainboard...
