GTX 980 Sufficient For AAA Games at 4K Resolution?

I'm thinking about upgrading from a GTX 770 4GB to a GTX 980. Right now I'm gaming on a 1080p 144 Hz monitor but eventually I'm going to upgrade to a 4k monitor. I was just wondering if a GTX 980 could run AAA games at high/ultra settings at 4k resolution while maintaining at least an average of 30 fps. I am especially curious if it could run The Witcher 3 at 4k resolution since you get a free copy of the game with a purchase of select 980 graphics cards. Also, I need to be able run DA: Inquisition, AC Unity, and Shadow of Mordor at 4k resolution with a 30 fps average or higher.

If the 980 isn't powerful enough for 4k with those games then I'd probably just buy a 2k monitor in the future instead.

I'm testing DA: Inquisition right now, just for you :) Currently running just a little bit over 5 GB of VRAM, settings at 4k ultra, everything is at ultra except for 2 of the AA settings. So if you're planning to play this game a lot like I do at these settings, I would wait for a new GPU or save up and get a Titan X later, but the 980 ti will probably be cheaper at 6-8GB of VRAM.
Get Titan X ! The best for 4K gaming . 250W only and fast performance . 50% faster than GTX 970 and is a single GPU and has 12GB VRAM

I run 290x crossfire at 4k and absolutely love it, 2 290x's can be had for about the same price as 1 980 and sli 980's is not that far a head of crossfire 290x's at 4k, I know you asked about nvidia but just thought I would throw that out there.

I would love to get a Titan X but I'm afraid I don't have the budget it for it. A R9 290X would have been an option for me it's just that several of my favorite PC games are Nvidia optimized. I play Unity and Watch Dogs a lot and I plan on buying Far Cry 4 eventually. All 3 of those games are made by Ubisoft and are Nvidia hardware favored. Mostly, I need a 980 for The Witcher 3 because I can get a free copy with a 980.

You could wait for the 980 ti if you're going to upgrade "later" and since the the 980 ti comes out later. That is if you don't want to pay $1,000 for a Titan X or doesn't want to run out of VRAM and get a bit better fps. For some of the games you mentioned will require more than 4GB of VRAM.

I can wait a little bit and see if Nvidia comes out with a higher VRAM model. It's a shame they didn't give the 980 more VRAM. The 4GB is a bottleneck for the card at 2k resolution and if doing SLI for 4k. Some games use close to 4GB of VRAM at 1080p let alone higher resolutions.
