Windows 8.1 using too much space

I'm having the same issue. I deleted all system restore data, defragged and optimized my c: drive multiple times, emptied my recycle bin, and ran ccleaner. Yet, the problem persists.

I can see (using windirstat) that Windows 8.1 is taking nearly 11 GB of my just-24 GB hard drive, and I'm losing my mind. I have deleted all apps and really stripped down my tablet's functionality to bare bones, yet I still have just 255 MB available on my c: drive, not even enough to install the latest Windows 8.1 Update.

Can anyone help?

try Disk Cleanup -> System files button
Seconded, there should be an option to clean up Windows Updates, since copies are always left in case you want to uninstall specific updates (you can always manually download them later on to have the option to uninstall)

Restore points mights also be another thing to consider deleting, you don't need that many present on your system, one taken before a big update when the system was stable might be enough.

Another thing to check is your paging file (it can take a lot space on your HD). With modern systems and normal users you can change it to a smaller size or even get rid of it you have enough RAM.

These should be configured from Control Panel / System / Advanced Settings

Welcome to Tom's Hardware, hmi1234!

I'd recommend you to run a malware/virus scan as well, because it might have infected your system.
A Disk Cleanup is definitely a good idea as @Nasima suggested.
Also expand the C:\windows\ directory and maybe post a screenshot to see what's the taking up so much space.
If you have a Windows Repair disk, run it to see if it will do you any good. If you don't, you can simply create one and run it.
Here's an article I found that might suggest several other methods to free up disk space: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/GuideToFreeingUpDiskSpaceUnderWindows81.aspx

Hope this helped! Good luck! :)
