ATX vs mATX vs mITX what do you actually lose?

I have only built 1 ATX build and never until now questioned going anything other than ATX. I understand that you generally gain the ability to fit your system into a smaller volume by sacrificing expansion slots bot PCIe, SATA and RAM (mITX) when moving to the smaller board forms.

But is that the end of the trade-offs or are you sacrificing other functionality too? Like are smaller boards still able to manage fan speeds in as versatile a manner as some top ATX boards?

I would appreciate some advice from anyone who has experience with these smaller forms.

Just FYI I am pretty set on going for a Z97 chipset board and LGA1150 CPU (Intel Core i7-4790K) as I do like to overclock for both my gaming and graphics applications. I am aiming for 16GB RAM but still debating if I'd eventually upgrade to 32GB given that I have been working with 4GB quite happily for the last 5 years.

Thank you for your answer.

Well if I were to go for a mATX board I would be looking to go for a smaller case as portability is always nice. I have my eye on the Phanteks Ethoo Evolv or the Corsair 240 Air as they are not the standard black box build.

So mATX are just as good as ATX. Do you not favour mITX because they are very limited in size?

Precisely. You answered your own question, sir ;) No other tradeoffs.

I have one mATX build which is my home server in a CM N200 mini tower case, I was considering mITX at the time but it would have involved price premium. All my gaming builds are in larger cases and utilize ATX boards. I am not against the mITX but believe there is a place for them in small format builds.
I like that Phanteks case you are considering and since you are building Intel then there is plenty of good mATX Z97 boards to do a gaming build.

I see so mATX does offer a bit of a price reduction whereas mITX can actually require a premium. I think I will consider mATX now as I have never really made full use of an ATX's expansion slots ever thus far, so it makes sense to use what I pay for.

Thank you for your help.
