Internet on laptop slows down a lot whenever another device connects

My brothers internet on his laptop slows down until it stops working whenever another device connects, any ideas?

Yes, a couple of ideas's. First, right click on wireless icon in tray (bottom right) then left click on "open network and sharing" then left click on the blue text next to "connections" it should say wireless. See what your bandwidth is. If both of you are are connecting to the router at the same time you are basically splitting this (more or less). I show 100Mbps on mine. Now, it gets interesting. Most standard routers that the cable company issues are in a "B,G" protocol. They will not transmit more then 54 Mbps regardless of how much bandwidth you buy. This is were a better router that Phillip mentioned would come into play. You would have to upgrade to a "N" protocol router, but, only if your bandwidth exceeds 54Mbps. Otherwise it would be a waste of money until you paid for more bandwidth. Second verify your computers have an "N" capable card installed. I will stop here to see if this helps. If this is not feasible we can get to installing a switch (must be hardwired though).
