Should I return my EVGA Supernova G2?

Hi,

I had a Corsair CX600 PSU to go with EVGA GTX 980 and got moderate amount of coil whine from the 980 when playing games. I know the CX600 isn't a really great PSU. I read that many people who had coil whine problems with the GTX 900 series used a corsair PSU, but they also reported that their coil whine problems were fixed after switching out for a EVGA Supernova G2 PSU.

So I bought a Supernova G2 750w PSU for $150US and my amount of coil whine was only reduced by around 10%. I feel that the noise reduction is not worth forking over $150 so I considered about returning it and just use my CX600 PSU instead. I will get back around $140 if I return it.

If you were me, would you return it and stick with CX600? If you wouldn't, what are some great things about keep using a Supernova G2?

Thanks

evga is changing the vrm/inductors that were first released on the cards to try to help prevent coil whine the cards with the newer ones tend to also have more phases like as in the hardware lux link

I believe in the 980 only so far the kingpin and the classified have been upgraded this way in the 970 its the cards that sn# starts with 3 [04G-P4-''3''975] and all 960's will have the new gen2 parts

this is why I asked what card you got ?? if its a card that sn# starts with a 1 or 2 its the kind like in the pcper link

as for your psu the supernova is a is a better quality build psu and a 150 more watts ?? to me it would be a more desirable unit so its your call on what you want to do there I think its...

I would return the CX 600 or keep it for a second build.
The 10 year warranty beats the 3 year warranty on the CX 600.
The EVGA is a much higher quality unit.

I don't know what the deal is with these 900 cards it sure seems a risk of a lemon in some way but you rarely see a 980 come up with whine

I'd hook up with evga on that and see what they say

or ssend it back to where you got it for a exchange for a msi card to see if things improve

depending on what 980 evga card you got

old style [look at the vrm's inductors ] see 2 spots empty

new style [kingpin ,classified ] with the gen2 vrm's

http://www.hardwareluxx.de/index.php/fotostrecken/artikel-galerien/evga-geforce-gtx-980-classified/evga-980classified-10dd5db39.html

this was changed on there new release 970 and 960 as well [970ssc+ and ftw+ ] from the old style vrms

so what is your card ???

Sorry, I'm not sure where exactly did I need to look for in those pictures, but I got my card on January of this year. Was the newer version released after January?

Also, is the 10 year warranty the only thing worth keeping the Supernova G2 for? I know that it's a higher quality PSU over the CX but unlike graphics cards or CPUs, I can't tell the difference in performance between these two PSUs. Is the CX much more likely to break, or something?

heres the msi 980 under the hood - nice clean looking 10 phase from the get go

anyway all this falls under doing the home work on the parts before you buy and not find things out after the fact .. good luck

Yeah, but I've never even heard of coil whine problem prior to my purchase of GTX 980, so I never discovered this issue as I wasn't aware of its existence when I was doing product research. I guess I'll take a chance on my RMA and hopefully get a newer model of this card without coil whine.

that's the thing with the 970 it seems persistent and a lot more common

like I said at first for the 980 not so much ?? maybe because not as many sell as the 970 ??

just contact evga support and see what they say there for the most part easy to work with if not rma to where you bought it from for a trade in another brand or try another card like you now got
that's your call

coil whine was reported on just about day one [gtx970]
