Hey Guys,

I have a old(ish) PC and want to upgrade (to a decent gaming rig).

My current specs are:
mobo: Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H
GPU: (Intergated) ATI Radeon HD 4250
Ram: 2x 2GB (3.6 Usable)
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955
Case: Some old thing without any fans
Power Supply: Aywun MEGA POWER 650W ATX A1-650E
Monitor: is ViewSonic VX2235wm

The things I want to upgrade are the GPU, ram and most likely to case too. (I am making this dual monitored too.)

Upgraded things:

GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 Super Clocked ACX 2.0
Ram: (I think that this wont be compatible with the motherboard) Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1866 MHZ
Case: DEEPCOOL TESSERACT WH Mid Tower

Would this build work? Any tips for improvement? (I'm on a budget of about $1000 NZD to $1200 NZD)

(Would I need to get two of the same monitors (as the one I have now has stopped being produced) or is it ok to get two different monitors?)

Thanks a lot

That memory won't work on your board, you need to get yourself 1666 mhz memory or the more common 1333.

I would consider upgrading the power supply to something on the forum's tier list around tier 1 or 2 http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html The one you have is a fire hazard.

The GTX 970 will let you play most all current games at a decent level of detail (at 1080p), and is useful if you decide to build the rest of the computer. But definitely toss that PSU and replace with a good one like

You will notice some slowdown due to your processor, but if you're not ready to rebuild this will do you fine for...

Thanks for the response

If I was to upgrade the mobo and processor, what would you recommend (with about $200 - $300 NZD) (and possible $300 - $400 NZD if new ram is being purchased (>1666mhz and 1333mhz))
Thanks

In that price range theres some but to be honest (as a Phenom II owner myself), in the price range youre looking to spend the performance jump isn't really worth spending the money, its just not that much faster. I would consider saving up a bit more so you can get yourself into something like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.2285096

This would be a monsterous performance jump over what you have now. Let me know what you think, I'm sure we can find something a bit cheaper as well (I'll take a look when I get to work, gotta run), but just something to keep in mind. You're better off replacing that PSU and graphics card, maybe get some memory, and then prices in a bit may come down on some faster equipment and you can update.

Edit- heres a good combo for a bit cheaper:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117372&ignorebbr=1

It comes out to about $200 NZD more than your top but the performance jump will be much larger. The processor is nearly double the speed of your current one. Compared to the closest thing worth buying I can find in your upper price range which is maybe 20%-25% faster. (the same motherboard and this processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117447&ignorebbr=1 )

Hello,

Thanks for the response.

I believe that I will just go with the I5 processor. So with the new potential specs would the rig work.
CPU: i5-4690K
MOBO: ASUS Z97-P
PSU: XFX TS Edition PRO650W
GPU: GTX 970 Super Clocked ACX 2.0 4GB GDDR5
Ram: Kingston HyperX FURY 8GB Kit (2x4GB) 1333MHz DDR3
Case DEEPCOOL TESSERACT WH Mid Tower

Or is there something that I could improve or would I need more fans in the rig cause I don't think there are any fans in the case

Thanks once again.

That would be a really solid gaming computer. As for fans, I looked up your case it comes with 1 exhaust fan, I would buy at least 1 intake fan, if not 2. You can put 1 in front and 1 or 2 on the side. The case also has top mounts for fans, if you do those you should make them exhaust. Fans are cheap, can never have too many.

Enjoy!

Hello,

I was doing some research about PC rigs, and came to a point where certain builds had CPU coolers, does this build require a CPU cooler, if yes any recommendations.

Thanks, once again
