USB SATA drive not showing in My Computer until after Windows 7 starts

Recently I've started having an issue with my external SATA drive :-

Enclosure : Seagate FA GoFlex Desk USB Device
Model : ST2000DL001-9VT156
Interface : USB (Serial ATA)
Partitions 2 G: H:

The drive is detected in BIOS and shows on the boot screen but has started to show in My Computer only after Windows 7 has booted, when an AutoPlay dialogue is shown for each partition.

Since I have programs installed to H:\Porgrams they won't run on startup unless I let Windows load, log out and then log in again, when the drive is already detected and the problem doesn't happen until the next reboot.

Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this and how to fix it please?

Well I found the root of the problem, my Solid State Drive

Sounds odd but Windows is on my SSD and it seems its too fast for my slightly old PC. If I'm just a few seconds slower entering my Windows password the problem doesn't happen at all.

Sorted :)
Hey Paladinz and welcome to the community.
First, I'd suggest that you backup any important data you may have on that drive, just in case. Then, I'd recommend that you try the drive with another computer, to see if the same thing happens. Other than that you could try reinstalling the USB drivers. You should also download the manufacturer's diagnostic tool to test the drive and see what's the situation with the HDD.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply Boogieman_WD,

CrystalDiskInfo and the drives S.M.A.R.T. show it as 100% healthy but I ran Seagates diagnostics also and they found no issues.

I tried the drive on my spare PC and it functioned normally so I put it back on my main PC but directly into the rear USB card instead of the extension hub and on booting the drive worked fine, so that may have been the problem all along :)

I'll see how it behaves over the next few days, I can always extend the USB lead for it.

Thanks again :)
