Can it be hardware issue when a GPU can work with Windows generic VGA driver? (but BSOD with manufacturer driver)

Hi,

I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 gpu in my laptop. I used to get random BSOD error of atikmdag.sys with STOP 0x0116. Then, I serviced my laptop for cooling and dust from authorized Sony service and reformatted to stock OS. Drivers are the original stock driver from Sony. There was a considerable reduction in temperature of the lap.

But after a week of operation, i got a graphic noise (1 sec long vibrating noise) while watching YouTube. The next day (Yesterday, April 8th 2015) again while watching a YouTube video I got the same BSOD of atikmdag.sys. After that there is continuous BSOD at start-up. I have tried clean re-install of drivers (the original Sony and the only update Sony provided ( v 8.* , dated October, 2010). I even tried the method of expanding atikmdag.sy_ and replacing it manually in system32 folder but still BSOD.

Finally, i uninstalled all ATI drivers, installed windows basic VGA driver vgapnp.sys for my GPU and now i am able to use it in the basic mode. Obviously, the performance is way too low.

Since my GPU works with basic driver can i rule out the possibility that it is a hardware damage? Any solution for the BSOD?

Ps: I can't use the latest ATI drivers as they doesn't work. I am confined to the ones provided by Sony. Still, today i am going to test with one latest driver update and using the method of expanding atikmdag.sy_ . Will post the result.

GPU make : ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 1GB
Year : 2010
OS : Windows 7 Home Professional 64 bit
RAM : 4GB
Laptop Make : Sony Vaio VPCEB36FG [similar to Vaio PCG71211w ]
CPU : Intel core i3-380M
RAM : 4GB

Solution
If you DON'T get problems using the basic Windows VGA drivers but DO get problems with the full drivers it could be hardware related, the Windows drivers are very basic and don't use the advanced graphics features the main drivers can access.
Can you System Restore?

Had tried system restore to the one a few days after my reinstall of OS. But this also gave me a Blue Screen.
