I have an issue with my Dell XPS 1640.. It was working fine one night... watched couple of movies and all... shut it down and went back to it next day and now I have an error message...and it won’t boot..

PXE-E61 Media Test Failure
Operating System not Found..

Installed a bootable version of Ubuntu on a usb stick and booted the same laptop, by going into the boot option and booting from USB... (It works buy using your RAM as a HDD, i think)..
All system go on Ubuntu.. Wifi, Sound, Vedio etc

I thought the HDD was bust... took the HDD out and used an external HDD case and connected it to the same laptop and all ok...can read and write to the disk...so HDD seems ok..

I thought the HDD Sata connecter might have gone bust...so swapped that for a new one.. (Part number K673D)... and still no luck...

It looks like the HDD is not spinning at all when the laptop is turned on...
Am I right in saying the motherboard is ok, as it ran fine on the Ubuntu..

The laptop is 5yrs plus old... but the HDD is probably 2Yrs old....Cant really afford to get a new laptop at the moment... so really wanna get this one fixed..

Any ideas anyone..??

ok.. took the laptop apart.. went through the mother board with a magnifying glass....
found a spot near the HDD connector, with some sort of dried residue... havent got a clue what it is...
cleaned it up with a brush and pressurized air... and wallah..its booting now...

think the residue was building a bridge between some IC's... well all working now....
just thought I update the issue...
