I got a HD7970 for free basically and been using it to game. I upgraded my PSU to handle it and it runs good. However, afterburner shows the card temps around 75-77c during intense games. The fan kicks up and gets pretty loud. Right now I have 3 / 4 case slots fitted with the fans the case came with, two in, 1 out and the free one on top.

what can i do to cool it down more? its a 3y/o card but still runs great

it's like 10 screws to take out. then some cue tips and 90% rubbing alcohol you can get at the dollar store... to clean the surface of the card (the places it contacts the blower/cooler are the places you'll find the thermal compound, that said you could dunk the gpu in the rubbing alcohol and as long as you let it dry off you won't damage anything)

then you need to follow the install instructions in the new gpu cooler you get. mostly its a bunch of thermal tape you have to apply to different parts, heat sinks to apply to them, then you wait like 6 hours for it to harden, and screw the rest of it on. It's just labor intensive, not hard.

That's the only alternative you really have to quiet it down. that or just buy a new one.

he said he got the card for free. spending $60 on an aftermarket cooler makes it a steal imho. the r9-280x was/is a beastly card. if you're gaming in 1080p it's still top of the line.
