24GB RAM in total but only 16GB usable

Hi
Just added 16gb ram ( 2x8 gb corsair vengeance) so I have now 24gb together with samsung 2x4gb.
However windows tells me I have 24gb installed but only 16gb is usable.
Checked my mobo and it says (asus m5a78l-m) can use up to 32gb.
Win 8.1
Any ideas?

What happens of you remove the old ram and just run the new 16gb set?

On your Asus m5a78l-m, are you using the most current BIOS version?

Go to the Asus website for your specific mobo to get and install the most current BIOS version. This could help resolve the matter.

What memory speed does your BIOS have set for the memory (i.e., 1333, 1600, etc)?

Are you overclocking anything (CPU, GPU, memory)?

So... Windows is telling you that you have 24GB available, but that it's already using 8GB of it (because 16 of the 24 GB is available).

That doesn't sound like it's a problem at all....except that you have a whole lot of programs running for some reason.

And no, it's not because Windows isn't recognizing it...becuase if it didn't recognize it, it would say "16 GB installed (X GB available)".

I asked for troubleshooting purposes. Its could possibly be a bad stick or a compatibility problem, it would help to know if the new kit works by itself.

Ok solved just swapped around stick&restart few times and finally windows picked up 24 gb.
I got fx 8120 oc to 4,1 ghz. ram set to 1600 + 1.5v

Anyway I think it has something to do with asus mobo, rather than bios and running prog.

Glad you resolved it. These issues are fairly common when mixing memory.

If it were me, I would drop the speed back to 1333 for max stability. Your noticeable performance difference would be nil (non-existent). Just something to consider if you see any flakiness.
