Freeing Hardware Reserved RAM

Hi,

I have a laptop running win 7 -64 bit with 4GB of RAM. But about 1 GB is HW reserved. I have read online that there are ways to reduce this amount significantly, but I have not been able to get any of the methods to work.

Does anyone know if this RAM can be freed up, and if so, how?

Check in BIOS whether you can reduce the amount of video memory. That's the only configuration you can make.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I have a discrete graphics card, so I don't think it is using any of the RAM.

bump - is there any way to free some of the hardware reserved RAM? Currently, 1 GB is being reserved out of 4GB and I don't think it is for graphics because I have a discrete card.

Are you sure your laptop has discrete GPU?

I am sure. I have the NVS 3100M from nvidia which has 512MB of RAM and does not used shared mem

Part of your problem is -x64. Either add RAM, or go back to -x32, you will probably get half a gig more.
