Just bought what I thought was going to be a brand new
( Hitachi Hdd 0f12455 2tb Sata 6gb/S Enterprise Storage 7200rpm 64mb Cache Bare Drive ), but when I was ready to install it in my case I noticed some kind of blue stuff (maybe glue), (maybe Locktite) in 4 of the 6 mounting holes. Now I'm thinking this was a return.
Any thoughts?

Hey !

If i were you I'd install install the disk and if it works i wouldn't worry ! if you want run some disk benchmarks to see if the disk is performing slower than it should, but otherwise i wouldn't worry as long as it works when you plug it in.

Hope this helped !

Sad to say it's usually a miracle when the HDD manufacturer sends you back a brand-new "virgin" HDD to replace the defective drive you RMA'd.
Invariably you'll receive a "refurbished" model unless you're very, very lucky. At least that's been our experience over the years.
Unfortunately the "warranty" gives the manuf. this option.

Was it a thick coating or just basically the color? It could be just a coating of paste used to prevent the screws from seizing. Something like this http://www.zoro.com/i/G3422824/?utm_source=google_shopping&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Google_Shopping_Feed&gclid=CJuqjM3j68QCFUJk7AodKTMAfw

I've noticed a bit of blue or other color stuff on many screws.

I'm afraid to install and format, then they'll have an excuse to not do a refund.

I was hoping it was just a Hitachi thing, that the blue stuff was put there in the factory. The static bag looked like it was sealed at the factory, no sighs of ever being opened before. I really wanted this model because it's from back in 2012, it seems the more newer something is, the less reliable it is, everything keeps getting made cheaper and cheaper.
I don't know anything about running benchmarks, would they be able to tell that I was messing with the drive and not issue a refund because of it?

This was bought thru a 3rd party (DataBug) at Amazon. They just gave me the RMA info for if I choose to return it.

Not on the screws....in the holes. It does look like some kind of neverseize, only it's not soft and pasty like neverseize, more hard like a paint. I originally thought maybe it's just something extra that Hitachi does to their HDDs at the factory......it is fairly neat, not just slopped on.
