Hi, I'm wondering whether I should get a gtx 970 or a gtx 780ti at this period in time (April 9, 2015). I play on 1080p and don't plan on upgrading to a new monitor any time soon. So the gtx 970 is about 330 usd and I can buy my friends gtx 780ti reference cooler which is in working condition for 350 dollars. I plan on playing bf4, csgo, gta 5, and newe pc titles as they release. Is the 780ti still worth it being 2 or so years old? Keep in mind that I'm getting it for about the same price as the gtx 970. So anyways I would like to hear everyone's opinions. :)

I think for your price range, there won't be any upcoming AMD cards that will be worth it. The 390 and 390X are supposed to be the only new GPUs in the next generation and they will cost significantly more than your price range.

With a new GTX 970, you'll also get a free copy of the Witcher 3 to help with the value proposition. The Witcher 3 is a fully next-gen PhysX game, which brings us to the other issue with waiting for the new AMD cards ... you still need to decide if you want to be in the Nvidia ecosystem or not. This is a very key decision point that most people pass over. The fact is that there are two different user experiences that begin after the purchase is made that depend upon which ecosystem you have joined.

In...
MFAA + DirectX 12.1 + low power usage = no brainer.

Get the GTX 970 since it is new and cost $330 instead of $350 for a used GTX 780 Ti. I am pretty sure there are factory overclocked GTX 970 that can beat the GTX 780 Ti.

But what about comparing the two in 1080p games. Doesn't the 780ti edge out even against say a evga gtx 970 SC? Also what about future proofing, I would like which ever card I get to be good for another 2 years atleast which one would truly be better? I understand that the 970 has 3.5 gb vram but will it be significant during the next 2 years?

Hardware capable DirectX 12.1 in the GTX 970 versus software capable DirectX 12.0 in the GTX 780 Ti, plus more RAM makes the GTX 970 the more "future-proof". The performance is basically the same.

Do you think personally that it would be worth waiting for the AMD 300 series cards rather than buying the 970 soon? I also heard that nvidia will probably not be making a ti version of the 970 and 980's and that they and amd will be focusing more on the advancement of higher resolutions supported by gpus. Thoughts?

In general, you're going to get more graphics settings and image quality options with Nvidia, like PhysX for example, and Adaptive VSync. You're also going to get consistently better driver support, better game compatibility, and lately lower power consumption, heat, and noise. For the most part, AMD is lacking in comparison.

If history holds true, the reality of the 390x will underwhelm its hype. If history also holds true, Nvidia will release its response, likely in the form of a GTX 980 Ti to rain on the 390x party. This card will be either faster, a better value, or both. Flag this post and come back in June-July to see how well those statements hold true.
