Currently i have 8gb of ram inside my pc. My cpu and gpu are the intel i5 4690 and the amd r9 290. Will adding say, 4 gb of ram, give me better fps in the game. Also, when I checked in task manager, it said that 2.4 gb of my ram was being used while i only had a browser and steam open. Is this normal?

THanks!!!

Are we talking 1 x 8GB or 2 x 4GB

Install single sticks in dual channel MoBos is not recommended. Adding RAM to a build that didn't come in the same package is not guaranteed to work. So wil adding an 8GB stick to an existing one has the dual benefit of adding dual channel and doubling quantity, it is not guaranteed to work tho most time will

What RAM, brand model number, speed and timings?

You will not see much of a difference with more RAM at 8GB 1333mhz or higher, faster ram even is only a couple of frames difference, of course if you like to run allot of stuff in the background this may impact on your fps .

The CPU and GPU that counts mostly towards FPS speed, of course better CPU usually means new MB that can handle the better speeds, save those pennies!

I have to differ. There is no magic, "one size fits all" answer to the effect of RAM speed. It varies greatly by application. In gaming, faster RAM **can** be the single most cost effective upgrade possible....it could also be miniscule. It depends upon where the bottleneck is. One of the problems is reviewers tend to look at average fps .... where minimum fps shows a greater impact from faster RAM. Secondly, while GFX is the usual performance limiter, the situation changes in multi card systems in which the GFX barrier has been removed. But as with applications, which game is involved can easily change the answer to the question. The STALKER series was one for example that was not only affected by faster RAM but even by PCI-E (x8 vs x16) bandwidth.

To answer the question "Does faster RAM increase gaming fps, ? " one can "prove" either answer by choosing different games as THG has done here:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/32-gb-ddr3-ram,3790-10.html

In Metro 2033 for our extra $20, going from 1600 to 2400, we go from 116.7 to 116.8 fps a whopping 0.09%

However, in F1, our $20 investment, gets us from 159 to 177 fps, an 11% increase.

Now to get a comparable 10+% increase from another component, you'd have to say spend $230 to go from a GTX970 to a GTX980 .... granted, the GFX card swap affects more games but even SLI will range fro 95% scaling to none or even negative scaling.

Saw othing asked here about DRAM speed, I read the question as adding additional DRAM, for Far Cry 4, which is GPU oriented performance wise. Adding over and above the current 8GB prob would have little effect. On far cry 4 investing in faster DRAM might be a very few FPS. Don't think most would find it cost effective
